
VideoLAN officially released vlc 2.0 code named “Twoflower”. Version 2.0 bringing some playback improvements, bug fixes for hundreds of bugs and experimental support for playing Blue-ray discs. VLC version 2.0 also brings user interface changes.
The “Twoflower” player got rewritten video output core and modules which allowing subpicture blending in GPU, enhanced speed and added support for a number of file formats.
“With faster decoding on multi-core, GPU, and mobile hardware and the ability to open more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs, 2.0 is a major upgrade for VLC,” said the company.
Decoding is enhanced with new multithreaded codes for h.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM formats, also with support for OpenMAX in Android. VLC version 2.0 has new rendering pipeline for video with higher quality subtitles and new video filter to enhance the video experience. It also brings new video and audio outputs for WIndows 7, Android, iOS and OS/2.
It added developer features with updated libraried, libVLC and libVLCcore to support Android and iOS. Also the licence of libVLC, libVLCcore and libcompat have changed from GPL to LGPLv2.1+ (Lesser GPL) which will allow developers to make use of these libraries in non GPL software.
